ThemeLandscapes & Nature

Belgrano's violet portrait faces an expansive view of Iguazú Falls, moving from republican memory to one of Argentina's great landscapes.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Manuel Belgrano is engraved in violet beside olive branches, Spanish bank text and prominent ten-peso numerals. An open watermark panel interrupts the otherwise dense field of guilloche, allowing the portrait and inscriptions to retain clear separation. The olive motif introduces a quiet civic tone without competing with Belgrano's likeness.

Reverse

Iguazú Falls fills the reverse with layered water, rock and vegetation, framed by olive branches and the Argentine national emblem. Fine engraved lines suggest the breadth and movement of the cataracts rather than isolating a single cascade. The natural panorama provides a spacious counterpoint to the closely ordered portrait side.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this is the first signature combination of the type, pairing Ricardo Antonio Cairoli with Alfredo Gómez Morales on Series C and D notes. Later printings retained the same Belgrano and Iguazú design while changing the signatories. The issue was introduced in 1973, making the signature pair more useful than the undated face for precise attribution.
