San Martín's blue portrait opens onto boats, buildings and mountains at Ushuaia, carrying the new peso argentino to Argentina's far south.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

José de San Martín is presented in blue beside olive branches, Spanish inscriptions and the hundred-peso-argentino denomination. A sunburst watermark occupies the pale field, replacing the heraldic watermark familiar from older peso notes. The formal composition preserves continuity while clearly naming the short-lived new monetary unit.

Reverse

Boats lie in Ushuaia harbour before city buildings and steep mountain ridges, with olive branches and the Argentine national emblem completing the frame. The view gives the reverse strong geographic identity at the country's southern edge. Fine blue engraving separates water, vessels, settlement and peaks within a compact panorama.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this first signature form was introduced on 1 June 1983 and carries Pedro Camilio López with Julio César González del Solar on Series A and B. A second form followed with a changed central-bank president. The explicit pesos argentinos wording makes the issue a concise document of Argentina's 1983 currency reform.
