Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Argentina's fourteenth president, Julio Argentino Roca, appears in purple engraving beside Spanish bank text and large thousand-austral values. A sunburst watermark fills the pale panel. The formal portrait and dense linework contrast with the denomination's rapidly diminishing purchasing power during the final years of the austral.

Reverse

A seated figure of Liberty, captioned Progreso, raises a torch beside a shield, while the Argentine national emblem occupies the surrounding field. Purple ornamental bands frame the allegory and repeat the value. On this variety the reverse is lithographed, giving it a smoother surface than the intaglio face.

It follows varieties distinguished by green or maroon optical patches, signatures and watermark changes.
