Nicolás Avellaneda's green portrait meets the torch-bearing figure of Progress, linking presidential history with Argentina's long civic allegory.

Obverse

Argentina's eighth president, Nicolás Avellaneda, appears in a finely modelled green portrait surrounded by Spanish inscriptions and restrained guilloche. The denomination is expressed in australes, the currency then nearing the end of its life. A sunburst watermark occupies the open field, while the face retains the crisp intaglio character of the series.

Reverse

The seated allegory of Liberty, identified as Progreso, holds a torch beside flowers and a shield, with the Argentine national emblem completing the reverse. Her upward gesture provides a strong diagonal within the otherwise balanced composition. The lithographed back has a flatter tonal quality than the engraved portrait side.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the sunburst watermark, lithographed reverse and René Emilio de Paul–Javier Antonio González Fraga signatures define the 1990 form. The earlier issue used a Liberty watermark and intaglio printing on both sides. Those production differences make watermark and reverse texture more dependable attribution tools than the unchanged Avellaneda portrait.
