A horseman, a windmill and a writer's desk carry two different views of the Australian bush across the blue polymer surface.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Banjo Paterson's hat and the nearby horseman establish the outdoor character of this side. A windmill and pen nib connect the rural scene to the act of writing, while lines from The Man from Snowy River enter the fine print. Bramble wattle and a sulphur-crested cockatoo bring recognisable living subjects into the transparent security area.
Reverse
Mary Gilmore's portrait is adapted from a photograph, while a smaller scene shows her seated at a desk in her King's Cross flat. A couple outside a bush dwelling supplies a domestic counterpart to Paterson's rider. Excerpts from No Foe Shall Gather Our Harvest enter the microtext, bringing her words into the same field as her likeness.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this is the first-year ten-dollar issue of the Next Generation series, released in September 2017. Paterson and Gilmore had already shared the earlier polymer ten, making the two designs useful companions. The redesign keeps the literary pairing but changes how birds, poetry and transparent elements are distributed, while the year digits '17' in the serial number identify the opening printing.
