A ram's curled horn and dense heads of wheat give this green two-dollar design its distinctly agricultural texture.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
John Macarthur appears beside a Merino ram, linking the portrait directly to the wool industry he helped establish. The sheep is no small heraldic accessory: its head and fleece receive the close attention usually reserved for the human subject. Green and yellow printing encloses both within Gordon Andrews's bold graphic language for Australia's decimal currency.
Reverse
William Farrer faces a cluster of Federation wheat, the variety associated with his experiments in breeding plants better suited to Australian conditions. The repeated ears spread the agricultural subject across the note instead of confining it to a single vignette. Wool on one face and grain on the other make the two portraits parts of one account of rural production.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-43e is the Johnston / Fraser signature combination at the end of the paper two-dollar sequence. The note itself is undated; 1985 identifies this variety's introduction. It belongs beside the earlier signature pairs and the two-dollar coin that replaced the denomination in 1988, allowing the change of monetary format to be followed directly.
