An eastern spinebill and prickly Moses wattle cross a transparent band, opening a strip of light beside the Queen's portrait.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Elizabeth II's portrait remains familiar, but the surrounding wattle and eastern spinebill belong to the renewed design. The clear window runs from one long edge to the other, interrupting the printed surface. Within it, Federation Pavilion and the moving bird connect the portrait to an Australian building and native species, giving the smallest denomination a particularly varied visual scale.

Reverse

Parliament House in Canberra is accompanied by its landscape plan. Seeing the building together with the planned ground around it draws attention to the way this seat of government occupies its site. Wattle and the spinebill continue across the reverse, so the architectural drawing sits within the same botanical and avian setting as the Queen's portrait.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, 2021 identifies a later printing of the design that opened Australia's Next Generation banknote series in 2016. The serial-number year and Lowe / Kennedy signatures distinguish it from the first release. A comparison with the earlier polymer five makes the full-height window and tactile denomination feature easy to trace as practical changes in the same value.
