Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the national mosque and a magpie robin introduce Bangladesh's first dated banknote on an experimental polymer format.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman appears beside Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and a magpie robin, or doyel, within a red polymer composition. Bengali inscriptions and denomination figures surround the portrait, while a shadow image of a roaring Royal Bengal tiger replaces a conventional paper watermark. The face combines leadership, faith and national bird imagery.
Reverse
The National Martyrs' Monument at Savar, Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and the satellite dish at Betbunia Earth Station share the reverse with Bengali and English text. Memorial, parliament and communications infrastructure are layered into a compact national panorama. The Bangladesh Bank emblem completes the sequence of post-independence institutions.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the issue introduced on 14 December 2000 is Bangladesh's first dated banknote and its notable early polymer experiment. Mohammad Farashuddin signs the sole regular variety, identified by its Bengali prefix series and the flower within the oval face area. Later taka issues returned to paper while retaining printed dates.
