ThemePortraits & People

Charles Duncan O'Neal's face and the bridge carrying his name give this brown vertical design a personal geography of Bridgetown.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The portrait of Charles Duncan O'Neal fills the main printed area, accompanied by the arms of Barbados and a broken trident. A medical doctor remembered for campaigning on behalf of the underprivileged, O'Neal supplies the human subject of the ten-dollar denomination. Brown tones hold the face and surrounding lettering together above the clear lower window.

Reverse

O'Neal Bridge crosses the Careenage in Bridgetown, linking the portrait to a route through the capital. Its low span cuts across the narrow upright note, with the waterfront extending beyond it. The bridge carries the reformer's name into the daily geography of the city, providing a specific local counterpart to the portrait on the front.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-82 belongs to the 2022 conversion of all six Barbadian denominations to polymer. The portrait and bridge connect it with the preceding paper design, while the orientation clearly separates the new family. Haynes's signature identifies this initial dated printing; later notes retain the main imagery but record a different governor.
