Bovell's portrait looks out from a blue field punctuated by a flying fish, before Bridgetown opens across the other side.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
John Redman Bovell occupies the portrait position, with the national arms, broken trident and flying fish grouped elsewhere in the design. Bovell's work as an agronomist gives the portrait a particular local reference: the island's sugar industry. The marine emblem and the formal crest widen that association without displacing the face at the heart of the denomination.
Reverse
The House of Assembly buildings stand beside Bridgetown's Careenage, bringing parliament and the waterfront into one view. Architectural lines organise the scene across the width of the note, contrasting with the concentrated portrait opposite. This is the shared Bridgetown reverse of the early family, before later redesigns gave the individual denominations their own related locations.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, Kurleigh King's signature separates P-36 from the otherwise closely related Blackman and Springer two-dollar notes. The note is undated; the 1987 attribution identifies this signature stage. The three governors can therefore be collected within a largely unchanged design, before the later redesigns altered the appearance of the denomination much more visibly.
