Samuel Jackman Prescod and Bridgetown's Parliament Buildings face one another across a purple note concerned with access to public life.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Samuel Jackman Prescod's portrait is set within the vertical purple field, with the national arms and broken trident nearby. His place here has a direct parliamentary connection: he was the first non-white person to sit in Barbados's House of Assembly. The large portrait makes an individual visible before the reverse introduces the institution with which his career is associated.
Reverse
The Parliament Buildings in Bridgetown supply the architectural subject. Masonry, rooflines and the tower replace the close facial detail of the front. Prescod's association with the House of Assembly gives the building a biographical connection to his portrait, while the note presents the parliamentary complex as a landmark rather than illustrating a particular sitting or debate.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the decisive feature of this second 2024 variety is the printed name DR. KEVIN GREENIDGE above GOVERNOR beneath the signature. Another 2024 twenty-dollar printing carries only the title. The date and portrait therefore do not settle the variety on their own: the small inscription is what separates P-83(2) within an otherwise continuous design.
