Frank Worrell's portrait rises above the transparent window, with the green of the note continuing into the cricket ground on its reverse.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Sir Frank Worrell is the principal figure in this tall green design. Appointed West Indies captain in 1960, he is accompanied here by Barbados's national arms and broken trident. His portrait occupies the printed field above the transparent window, with the narrow format keeping the face prominent instead of placing it beside a wide sporting scene.

Reverse

The 3Ws Oval at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, brings the portrait into a place devoted to cricket. Its name joins Worrell with Everton Weekes and Clyde Walcott. The facility also reappears within the transparent window, so one location is encountered twice: as a printed view and as an image that acquires a pearly sheen when tilted.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the five-dollar note is the cricket-centred member of Barbados's first all-polymer family, issued in December 2022. It retains Worrell from earlier paper issues while changing the format and the way the reverse image is secured. This opening Cleviston Haynes printing can be paired with the later Kevin Greenidge signature issue.
