The blue 1 Ngultrum opens Bhutan’s 2006–2021 series with two dragons around the Wheel of Dharma and Simtokha Dzong on the reverse.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Two dragons flank the Khorlo, or Wheel of Dharma, with Dzongkha text and the denomination. The surrounding typography supports the motif without crowding its outline or ornamental detail. The use of blue, red, and green creates a consistent ground for the illustration, official text and value figures.

Reverse

Simtokha Dzong appears with Dzongkha and English text and the denomination. The composition gives the landmark room to read as architecture, while inscriptions and numerals complete the formal banknote field. The printed field uses blue, red, and green to bind the central imagery to the monetary text around it.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-27a is the original paper version of the 1-ngultrum design, printed by De La Rue and signed by Lyonpo Wangdi Norbu. The 2013 P-27b retained the design but changed both printer and substrate, moving to Giesecke & Devrient production on Hybrid paper/polymer stock.
