Two dragons flank the Wheel of Dharma on the front, while Simtokha Dzong gives the reverse a calm architectural focus.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Two dragons flank the Khorlo, or Wheel of Dharma, beneath Dzongkha text and the denomination. Value markings supply a restrained frame while the depicted object remains the side’s most recognisable feature. A blue, red, and green scheme keeps the separate pictorial and monetary elements within a single visual field.

Reverse

Simtokha Dzong appears with Dzongkha and English inscriptions and the denomination. The composition gives the landmark room to read as architecture, while inscriptions and numerals complete the formal banknote field. A blue, red, and green palette carries from the principal motif into the surrounding typography and value markings.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-27b is the 2013 production change within the established 1-ngultrum design. De La Rue paper was replaced by Giesecke+Devrient production on Louisenthal Hybrid, and the signature changed to Governor Dasho Daw Tenzin. Date, printer, substrate and signature separate it clearly from P-27a.
