The 2013 20 Ngultrum pairs the third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, and the Wheel of Dharma with Punakha Dzong.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck appears beside the Khorlo, or Wheel of Dharma, with Dzongkha text and the denomination. Value indicators and official text are integrated around the likeness, balancing monetary information with the commemorative weight of the portrait. The yellow and green palette provides continuity between the illustration, typography and value numerals.
Reverse
Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungtang Dechen Photrang Dzong, appears with Dzongkha and English inscriptions. Denomination figures and official lettering frame the structure without obscuring the architectural details that identify the scene. A yellow and green palette carries from the principal motif into the surrounding typography and value markings.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-30b is the 2013 Dasho Daw Tenzin signature variety of the 20-ngultrum type. Unlike P-27b and P-29b, the 20-ngultrum remained a De La Rue paper issue, so its 2013 distinction is the date and signature rather than a printer or substrate change.
