ThemeIndustry & Infrastructure

Three chiefs share the blue-violet portrait field, while a small diamond contrasts with the much larger excavation opposite.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Sebele I, Bathoen I and Khama III appear together, giving the hundred-pula note a collective portrait instead of a single leader. A diamond and the zebra-supported national arms accompany them. The chiefs' grouping recalls their joint political action in the nineteenth century; the mineral beside them anticipates the different source of national importance explored on the reverse.

Reverse

A woman examines rough diamonds through a loupe, with the Orapa open-pit mine extending behind the close-up work. The scene connects two very different scales: a stone small enough to inspect by hand and the broad excavation from which diamonds are recovered. Extraction and assessment are both present, keeping the mineral's story attached to human skill as well as geology.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the group portrait links this denomination with the three chiefs' 1895 mission to Britain against the expansion of Cecil Rhodes's interests. The 2016 note continues that subject in the smaller-format family introduced in 2009. Its Matambo / Mohohlo pairing belongs before the later change of governor, providing a second, documentary way to place it within the series.
