ThemePortraits & People

Viola Desmond's upright portrait rises beside the streets of Halifax, with a museum of human rights continuing her story on the reverse.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Desmond's face stands beside a rendering of Halifax's historic North End, the neighbourhood where she lived and worked. The map includes Gottingen Street, home to her beauty business. This local setting makes the portrait particular: a businesswoman from a recognisable community whose refusal to leave a segregated cinema section in 1946 brought her into conflict with racial discrimination.

Reverse

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg rises through the vertical composition. An eagle feather and an excerpt from the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms extend the subject beyond one biography. The museum gives the scene its architectural scale; the Charter text makes equality explicit, while the feather acknowledges Indigenous peoples' continuing pursuit of rights and freedoms.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this design marks the Bank of Canada's first vertically oriented circulating note and the first regular portrait of a Canadian woman. The Wilkins / Macklem signatures distinguish P-113(2) from the original Wilkins / Poloz release. Its retained 2018 date names the design issue, so the signatures are necessary to place this printing correctly within the sequence.
