Chile 1000 Pesos 2020, P-161j, UNC

Cool green polymer layers and transparent security structures transform the composition into a disciplined meditation on republican memory and the monumental geography of southern Chile.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse centers on the portrait of Ignacio Carrera Pinto, framed by concentric security engraving, stylized solar motifs, and translucent polymer architecture integrated directly into the surface of the note. Fine microprinting, tactile elements for the visually impaired, and the transparent window create a technically precise composition where historical portraiture merges with Chile’s modern banknote engineering.

Reverse

The reverse opens into the dramatic rock formations of Torres del Paine National Park, where steep mountain silhouettes and open Patagonian space dominate the visual field. Expansive landscape engraving and soft mineral green tonalities shift the narrative away from institutional portraiture toward the remote natural grandeur associated with the southern territories of Chile.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this polymer issue belongs to the bicentennial banknote family of Chile introduced to modernize circulation currency through advanced substrate technology and sophisticated security integration. The combination of republican portraiture and iconic Patagonian scenery places the note among the most recognizable modern South American polymer emissions of the twenty-first century.
