ThemePortraits & People

Bolívar and Santander share the face before the reverse opens toward mountain, waterfall and condor, joining republican memory to Andean grandeur.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Simón Bolívar appears in military uniform beside Francisco de Paula Santander, their portraits balanced within blue and orange engraving. Formal Banco de la República inscriptions and the one-peso-oro value frame the paired founders. A security thread crosses the paper, while this dated variety has no watermark.

Reverse

A waterfall descends through a mountain landscape beneath a soaring Andean condor, shifting the design from political portraiture to the scale of the natural world. The Liberty-head bank seal and repeated denomination complete the composition. Fine blue linework gives mist, rock and feathers distinct textures.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the precise 2 January 1964 date identifies this later one-peso-oro variety, signed by manager Eduardo Arias Robledo and secretary Germán Botero de los Ríos. The security thread is an important check because closely related printings exist with different construction. Its dual portrait also preserves the historic pairing of Bolívar and Santander.
