Antonio Nariño's military portrait gives way to the enigmatic stone figures of San Agustín, drawing political and ancient histories together.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Antonio Nariño appears in military uniform beside an Andean condor, set within purple, green, blue and maroon engraving. The ten-pesos-oro denomination and bank title form a firm typographic frame around the portrait. This dated paper variety carries neither security thread nor watermark, leaving the printed likeness dominant.
Reverse
Monumental stone figures from San Agustín Archaeological Park stand across the reverse, their compact forms translated into crisp engraved lines. The Liberty-head bank seal and denomination sit within the surrounding ornament. Ancient sculpture replaces the military portrait, widening the note's historical range far beyond the republican period.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 7 August 1980 date places this note within the later signature sequence of the design. Rafael Gamma Quijano signed as manager with Francisco J. Ortega Acosta as secretary. The archaeological reverse remained constant across several issues, so the date and names provide the clearest route to the exact variety.
