Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Antonio Nariño appears in military dress beside a document, surrounded by orange, red, violet and green ornament. The hundred-pesos-oro value is reinforced by a solid thread printed BRC 100. Nariño's portrait also forms the watermark, giving the political figure a second, quieter presence within the paper.
Reverse
A church on the main plaza of Villa de Leyva stands beside a screw-type printing press and the Liberty-head bank seal. Colonial architecture and print technology share the field, evoking the settings and instruments through which political texts circulated. Layered orange engraving holds the distinct subjects within one historical composition.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1 January 1990 date, Francisco J. Ortega Acosta and Luis Carlos León Cuervo signatures, and Bogotá printer imprint identify this issue. The lettered BRC 100 thread and Nariño watermark offer additional checks. A later 1991 variety retained the design but changed the city name in the printer line to Santa Fe de Bogotá.
