Antonio Nariño, Villa de Leyva and a historic hand press create a dialogue between independence, place and Colombian printing.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Antonio Nariño in military uniform is paired with a document against orange, red, violet and green guilloche. A solid security thread carries BRC 100 lettering, while the watermark repeats Nariño's portrait. The design remains visually close to the preceding issue, placing greater weight on small production details.

Reverse

The church and main plaza at Villa de Leyva are joined by a screw-type printing press and the Liberty-head bank seal. The press gives physical form to the circulation of political ideas associated with Nariño. Architectural and mechanical forms are balanced across the reverse through warm, closely engraved colour.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 7 August 1991 date and the Imprenta de Billetes—Santa Fe de Bogotá wording distinguish this variety from the 1990 Bogotá-imprint issue. Francisco J. Ortega Acosta and Luis Carlos León Cuervo remain the signatories, and the design, watermark and BRC 100 thread are unchanged. The city-name revision is therefore the decisive catalogue feature.
