ThemePortraits & People

Jorge Eliécer Gaitán emerges from scenes of public assembly, making the thousand-peso note a study of political voice and popular presence.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Jorge Eliécer Gaitán appears beside a crowd viewed from Medellín's Hotel Nutibara, with balance scales used as a registration device. A square tactile symbol assists recognition by touch. Orange and brown engraving carries the portrait across a solid thread demetalized with BR COLOMBIA, while Gaitán also forms the watermark.

Reverse

Gaitán raises his hat while announcing his presidential candidacy before a crowd in Bogotá. His quotation and signature accompany the gathering, together with flowers, balance scales and the Liberty-head bank seal. The repeated crowd transforms the reverse from an isolated portrait into an image of public speech and collective political participation.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 19 August 2015 date identifies a late printing of this established Gaitán design. José Darío Uribe Escobar and José Tolosa Buitrago supplied the signatures. Because the central imagery remained stable through a long issue sequence, the printed date and signature pair are essential for placing this variety accurately.
