Francisco José de Caldas and a globe introduce a reverse of pre-Columbian gold, joining scientific inquiry to Colombia's ancient metalwork.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Scientist and independence figure Francisco José de Caldas is portrayed beside a globe within brown, green, orange and purple engraving. Banco de la República text and the twenty-pesos-oro value surround the portrait in a measured layout. No security thread or watermark is present, keeping the globe and likeness visually prominent.

Reverse

Gold objects associated with Bogotá's Gold Museum are arranged as the principal reverse subject, their ceremonial forms set against intricate guilloche. The Liberty-head bank seal and denomination complete the field. Metallic artefacts rendered in printed colour create a deliberate contrast between material richness and the disciplined language of banknote engraving.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 1 January 1983 date and Hugo Palacios Mejía–Francisco J. Ortega Acosta signatures define this particular printing. The design connects Caldas's scientific reputation with pre-Columbian objects rather than repeating a single historical period. As on neighbouring issues, date and signature pairing are the strongest variety markers within stable artwork.
