ThemeMilitary & Historical Events

José María Córdova and the Andean condor lead toward Cartagena's San Felipe fortress, linking independence-era memory with Caribbean defence.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

General José María Córdova appears in a formal engraved portrait beneath the wings of an Andean condor. Brown and green guilloche frames the five-pesos-oro value and Banco de la República text. This printing has neither a security thread nor a watermark, leaving the engraved imagery to define the face.

Reverse

Castillo San Felipe de Barajas rises above Cartagena in a broad architectural view, its sloping walls and strategic position rendered through fine green linework. The Liberty-head bank seal and denomination occupy the surrounding field. The fortress extends the face's military association from an individual commander to a defensive landscape.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 1 April 1979 date and the Rafael Gamma Quijano–Francisco J. Ortega Acosta signature pair identify this late stage of the long-running five-pesos-oro design. The absence of both security thread and watermark confirms its construction. Date and signatures are more useful than the largely unchanged central artwork when separating printings.
