Camilo Torres Tenorio faces a field of Colombian orchids, shifting the fifty-pesos design from political portrait to botanical abundance.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Camilo Torres Tenorio appears in a formal portrait within purple, yellow and green guilloche. Large denomination numerals and Banco de la República inscriptions frame the likeness without competing with it. This later printing uses paper without a security thread or watermark, making the engraved portrait the primary identifying image.
Reverse
Colombia's national emblem is placed among sprays of native orchids, whose varied petals introduce a softer organic rhythm to the formal design. The flowers spread across the field rather than forming a single specimen study. Repeated value devices and restrained ornament keep the botanical arrangement tied to the note's monetary function.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1 January 1986 date and the Francisco J. Ortega Acosta–Roberto Salazar Manrique signature pair identify this later fifty-pesos-oro stage. The absence of both security thread and watermark is a significant construction change from earlier forms. Bogotá's Imprenta de Billetes produced the issue in the established 140-by-70-millimetre format.
