A coelacanth swims above low green islands, its broad fins answering the paddle of the canoe on the other side.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The coelacanth's scaled body takes up much of the blue field, with the islands of Nioumachoua beneath it. Fine text and the red pinwheel device interrupt the natural scene without enclosing it in a conventional picture frame. The oversized fish brings its unusual fins and profile close to the viewer, while the distant islands establish the setting as Comorian waters.
Reverse
A man manoeuvres a pirogue across an open field of colour. The narrow hull and paddle introduce human movement into the marine subject, and a poem by Mab Elhad accompanies the scene in the note's French and Arabic setting. The pinwheel repeats across the two sides, a small fixed point against the freer outlines of fish, islands and boat.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this later P-16 retains the printed 2005 date of Roger Pfund's design but belongs to the EverFit composite version introduced in 2020. Its seven-digit serial format and Imani / Rioux pair separate it from the earlier paper printings. The distinction preserves the history of an award-winning design without attributing its original 2006 recognition to this later production.
