ThemeCultural Heritage

Red-brown and blue-green engraving places Knin's hilltop fortress above a turbulent currency created by the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The fortress above Knin occupies the face beneath Serbian Cyrillic inscriptions and a large 5,000-dinara value. Red-brown and blue-green linework clearly separates the fortified skyline from the surrounding ornamental border. A Greek-key watermark pattern runs through the paper, while the issue carries no security thread.

Reverse

A stylized vase forms the principal image, balanced by the Serbian state emblem and Croatian-language text. The decorative object gives the reverse a calmer, more archaeological character than the defensive architecture on the face. Repeated numerals and geometric edging keep the high denomination visually anchored.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this note belongs to the 1993 Serbian Krajina series issued after the 1 October monetary reform removed six zeros, making one new dinar equal to one million old dinars. The A prefix and Pavao Marjanović signature identify the standard issue. Its modest face value places it near the beginning of a rapidly escalating inflation sequence.
