Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The Banco Nacional de Cuba seal, enclosing a star, shield and laurels, stands against a circular underprint radiating from the centre. A large letter C identifies the certificate series, while blue and orange linework separates the one-peso value from the official Spanish text. The paper has no security thread and carries an X-pattern watermark.
Reverse
Denomination figures occupy the corners and centre within a restrained field of Spanish instructions. Blank lines were provided for the holder's signature and a stamped issue date, making the reverse part of the certificate's control system rather than a pictorial display. Symmetry and open space replace the narrative scenes found on ordinary Cuban currency.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this Series C certificate was introduced on 1 June 1987 for authorized foreign-exchange holders at a rate of one peso to one US dollar. Series FH identifies the one-peso issue. The certificates expired five years after issue, could not be transferred and were not exchangeable back into foreign currency, placing them outside ordinary cash circulation.
