ThemeMilitary & Historical Events

José Martí's quiet portrait opens toward the charged movement of rebels entering Havana, binding national memory to a decisive revolutionary morning.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

José Martí appears in a formal engraved portrait beside the Central Bank of Cuba logo, surrounded by olive-green and yellow guilloche. Spanish inscriptions and the one-peso value are distributed across a broad horizontal field. The pale watermark area carries a repeating BCC pattern, while this early printing omits a security thread.

Reverse

Fidel Castro and Camilo Cienfuegos stand with armed rebels and flags on a tank entering Havana on 8 January 1959. The long vehicle and clustered figures give the reverse a forward-moving narrative that contrasts with Martí's still portrait. The caption fixes the scene to the revolution's arrival in the capital.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 2002 printing belongs to the early Francisco Soberón Valdés period and is recorded with GB-01 to GB-28 series designations. Its BCC-pattern watermark and absence of a security thread separate it from the upgraded one-peso printings introduced later in the decade. The issue fits naturally into both Cuban date runs and security-feature progressions.
