ThemeMilitary & Historical Events

Olive-green portraiture yields to flags, rifles and a tank entering Havana, turning a modest denomination into a compact revolutionary narrative.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

José Martí occupies the face beside the Central Bank of Cuba emblem, his portrait held within olive-green and yellow ornament. Spanish bank text and denomination figures form a measured frame. A solid thread bearing demetallized PATRIA O MUERTE lettering crosses the paper, and Célia Sánchez Manduley appears in the watermark field.

Reverse

The reverse records Fidel Castro, Camilo Cienfuegos and fellow rebels riding a tank into Havana on 8 January 1959. Rifles and raised flags create a dense crest above the vehicle, while the horizontal movement carries the scene across the full width. Printed text identifies the event rather than leaving it as an anonymous military image.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 2007 issue is part of the strengthened one-peso group with a portrait watermark and demetallized security thread. Francisco Soberón Valdés remains the signatory, while GH-01 to GH-47 series markings identify the production. These features place it between the simpler BCC-watermark notes and the later Medina-signed stage without any change to the principal artwork.
