Martí remains composed on the face while Havana's revolutionary arrival advances across the back in rifles, flags and armoured movement.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

A portrait of José Martí anchors the olive-green and yellow face beside the Central Bank of Cuba logo. Guilloche opens around the denomination and Spanish text, leaving a clear area for the Célia Sánchez Manduley watermark. The solid security thread carries the national motto PATRIA O MUERTE in demetallized lettering.

Reverse

Fidel Castro, Camilo Cienfuegos and armed rebels ride a tank into Havana on 8 January 1959. The group rises above the vehicle in a compact band of figures and flags, giving the composition greater energy than the portrait side. A dated caption turns the engraved scene into an explicit record of revolutionary history.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, 2009 introduces Ernesto Medina Villaveirán's signature to this one-peso design. Series GJ-01 to GJ-47 define the regular production, and the established portrait watermark and motto thread remain in place. It is the final dated stage before the underprint was re-engraved for 2010, making it a precise endpoint within the earlier layout.
