Blue-green geometry expands around Cuba's bank seal, turning the five-peso exchange certificate into a precise instrument of controlled spending.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
A circular field of radiating lines surrounds the Banco Nacional de Cuba seal with its star, shield and laurels. Blue and green printing gives the five-peso value a cooler register than the one-peso companion. The large C marks the series, while an X-pattern watermark occupies paper without a security thread.
Reverse
Large value figures are repeated at the centre and corners around Spanish conditions of use. Lines for the payee's signature and stamped issue date were intended to personalize and time-limit each certificate. The absence of a landscape or portrait keeps attention on denomination, authorization and the document's restricted monetary function.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, black serial numbers and black FE series markings at lower left and upper right identify this first five-peso form. A red-serial companion exists, making colour and series position practical checkpoints. Introduced on 1 June 1987, it belongs to the Series C certificates valued at parity with the US dollar and valid for five years after issue.
