Two spotted eagle rays spread their fins through blue water, while Simpson Bay Lagoon appears above the surface on the other side.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The pair of spotted eagle rays stretches across the horizontal face, their wing-like fins providing the principal movement. A yellow cowry and the denomination form a smaller colour-changing detail. Repeated rays give the scene depth without a crowded reef setting, and the dominant blue lets their pale markings remain distinct within the shared marine design of the new currency.

Reverse

Simpson Bay Lagoon on Sint Maarten occupies the vertical reverse. Turning the note changes both the viewing direction and the scale: the close underwater subjects give way to an inhabited coastal setting. Within the five-note family, this is one of the reverse views that places Sint Maarten alongside Curaçao's landmarks, giving the shared currency identifiable locations in both countries.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the twenty-guilder value is a deliberate change in the denomination structure introduced in 2025: it occupies the role previously held by the Netherlands Antillean twenty-five. That is a change in available note values, not a conversion rate. The currency itself replaced its predecessor at par, making this a useful example of a new monetary family altering everyday denomination choices.
