ThemeIndustry & Infrastructure

Men shovel salt beside a camel, while the opposite face enlarges the scale of movement to cranes and container ships.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Ali Ahmed Oudoum, a pioneer of Djibouti's independence struggle, appears before a salt-working scene with labourers, a camel and small rail wagons. Shovels and transport equipment describe the handling of salt at ground level. The portrait belongs to political history; the activity behind it records an industry through the workers and tools needed to move its product.

Reverse

Container ships and terminal cranes fill the foreground of a wider view of Djibouti's port. Their straight structural lines replace the smaller tools and animal transport opposite. Cargo handling becomes the common subject of the two faces, moving from hand labour to large maritime equipment while keeping both scenes tied to Djibouti's position as a place of exchange.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-42a(2) retains the 2005 design but carries Ahmed Osman Ali's signature in place of Djama Mahamoud Haid's. The unchanged portrait cannot separate those two varieties; the signature can. Salt working and container handling also give this denomination a specific industrial pairing within a collection of Djibouti's port and transport subjects.
