Mamluk stonework and the colossal figures of Abu Simbel meet across a compact Egyptian pound rich in architectural and pharaonic detail.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The mosque and mausoleum of Sultan Qaytbay rises at the right, its dome and minaret rendered in fine brown and violet engraving. Arabic bank text and the denomination occupy the centre, while the pale watermark reserve balances the architecture. Ornamental borders keep the composition formal without diminishing the monument's intricate Mamluk profile.

Reverse

Four seated statues of Ramesses II from the Great Temple at Abu Simbel dominate the archaeological scene. They are joined by birds and decorative forms derived from the structure erected before the Luxor Temple of Amenophis II, together with cartouches naming Nefertari and Ramesses II. English inscriptions and repeated values frame this concentrated survey of royal imagery.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, within Egypt's long-running one-pound series, the 2001 issue captures the final phase signed by Ismail Hassan Mohamed. It fits especially well in a date-led study of a design that kept its Mamluk and Abu Simbel imagery while successive governor issues created distinct catalog stages. The result is continuity made legible through dating.
