Sultan Qaytbay's Mamluk complex and the seated colossi of Abu Simbel frame a replacement note identified beyond its unchanged artwork.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The mosque and mausoleum of Sultan Qaytbay rises at the right beneath Arabic bank text, its dome and minaret articulated in brown and yellow engraving. A broad watermark reserve opens the left half, while denomination devices and a modern windowed thread introduce sharper security elements. The architecture retains the calm balance of the long-running one-pound design.

Reverse

Four monumental seated statues of Ramesses II at Abu Simbel form the principal scene. Cartouches naming Ramesses II and Nefertari appear among birds and decorative forms taken from the structure before the Luxor Temple of Amenophis II. English inscriptions hold the ancient elements together across the reverse's green and brown ornamental field.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, replacement status gives this 18 May 2016 note its central collecting identity and separates it from the regular one-pound sequence of the same period. It belongs equally well in an Egyptian date run and in a specialist group devoted to replacement issues. The distinction is numismatic rather than visual, strengthening its specialist appeal.
