Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Sultan Qaytbay's mosque and mausoleum stands at the right, its stone dome, minaret and carved facade translated into fine brown engraving. Arabic lettering and value devices occupy the centre and borders, while the pale watermark field opens the left side. A windowed Motion thread marks this later security stage without displacing the historic architecture.

Reverse

The seated colossi of Ramesses II from the Great Temple at Abu Simbel dominate the reverse. Birds, ornamental forms and cartouches naming Nefertari and Ramesses II derive from ancient structures associated with Luxor and the royal complex. English bank text and geometric patterning arrange the imagery as a compact record of monumental kingship.
