The Great Sphinx, Giza pyramids and Nekhbet lead toward Cairo's Alabaster Mosque on a revived low-value government note.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The Great Sphinx and pyramids of Giza occupy the face beside the vulture goddess Nekhbet. Brown, orange and green printing surrounds the archaeological group with Arabic text and the ten-piastre value, while the Tutankhamun-mask watermark occupies a pale reserve. The design compresses royal monument and protective deity into a small paper format.
Reverse
The Muhammad Ali Pasha Mosque rises within Cairo's Citadel beneath English text naming the Arab Republic of Egypt. Its domes and minarets are presented as a single architectural silhouette, framed by guilloche and repeated values. The transition from Giza to Ottoman-era Cairo gives the note a broad chronological reach despite its modest size.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, a shortage of coins brought piastre banknotes back in 1998 after their 1991 demonetization. That unusual return gives P-187 significance beyond its small face value and places it at the beginning of Egypt's revived government-note series. The issue documents an exceptional reversal in Egypt's low-denomination paper currency policy.
