Violet and orange carry the Sphinx and pyramids across from Muhammad Ali's mosque in a compact issue defined by serial style.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The Great Sphinx rests before the pyramids of Giza, surrounded by violet and orange security engraving. Arabic text naming the Arab Republic of Egypt, the denomination and widely spaced serial numerals share the face with a pale Tutankhamun watermark field. The monuments remain clear because the surrounding ornament is kept low and finely patterned.

Reverse

The Muhammad Ali Pasha Mosque at Cairo's Citadel fills the reverse with its central dome, cascading half-domes and twin minarets. English text and repeated ten-piastre values frame the architectural view, while interlaced guilloche carries the violet-orange palette across the note. The building provides an Islamic counterpart to the pharaonic monuments on the face.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the collectable distinction lies in the broad, thin serial typography visible on the photographed note. It is best understood beside other 2002 ten-piastre serial styles, where a small printing difference creates a recognized Pick subvariety without altering the monuments or signature. That makes it especially rewarding in a focused serial-variety study.
