The solemn interior of Al-Rifa'i Mosque gives way to Khafre, Horus and the pyramids in a measured dialogue between two Egyptian eras.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
An interior view of Al-Rifa'i Mosque in Cairo fills the face with arches, columns and suspended lamps. Violet, brown and orange engraving deepens the enclosed space, while Arabic text, serial numbers and the ten-pound value remain close to the margins. The design treats the mosque as an architectural interior rather than a distant skyline.
Reverse
The diorite statue of King Khafre appears with the falcon god Horus protecting the ruler's head. Three pyramids of Giza extend the royal image into landscape, and hieroglyphic birds add a further archaeological register. English bank text and broad guilloche fields organise the figures without competing with the dark, sculptural presence of the statue.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 1982 variety belongs to Mohamed Saleh Amin Shalaby's governorship and marks a clearly bounded chapter in the long-lived ten-pound design. It rewards signature-led comparison, showing how Egypt retained the same religious and pharaonic imagery while administrative succession created distinct catalog stages. That continuity is central to the series' appeal.
