Cairo's Alabaster Mosque faces a charging royal chariot, joining Ottoman architecture to carved narratives from pharaonic Karnak.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The Muhammad Ali Pasha Mosque crowns the Citadel of Cairo, its central dome and slender minarets rising through green and pink linework. Arabic inscriptions and a large written denomination cross the lower field, while the watermark space opens the left side. The architecture provides a calm, symmetrical counterweight to the denser ancient scenes on the reverse.

Reverse

Ramesses II draws his bow from a war chariot beside reliefs from the Chapel of Senusret I at Karnak. The carved sequence evokes a coronation, the inauguration of temple construction and a pharaoh before an offering table. Stylized papyrus flowers, English text and repeated value devices bind the separate archaeological images into one horizontal frieze.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 16 December 1986 date places this example near the beginning of Mahmoud Salah Hamed's P-52b(3) stage. It is strongest in a chronological run of Egypt's twenty-pound notes, where an unchanged mosque-and-chariot design reveals its history through dated governor issues. The issue connects late-1980s administration with persistent national imagery.
