ThemeReligious Heritage

A Citadel mosque and the martial figure of Ramesses II anchor this early 1988 stage of Egypt's enduring twenty-pound design.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The Muhammad Ali Pasha Mosque, often called the Alabaster Mosque, stands above Cairo in green, pink and brown engraving. Its clustered domes and twin minarets form the face's architectural centre, with Arabic bank text and value inscriptions arranged below. A broad watermark field prevents the monumental silhouette from overwhelming the note's long format.

Reverse

Ramesses II is shown firing an arrow from his chariot, followed by carved episodes from the Chapel of Senusret I at Karnak. Coronation, temple building and ritual offering scenes unfold like a stone register across the note. Papyrus ornament and English inscriptions complete a reverse built around movement, kingship and ceremonial continuity.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 4 January 1988 date falls one day after the earliest listed date for this variety, providing a precise early marker within the sequence. Later dates retain the same Citadel mosque and Ramesses II composition, so chronology and the Hamed signature are the practical points of comparison across this long-lived design.
