The Alabaster Mosque and Ramesses II's chariot return in a security-rich paper issue combining religious and pharaonic monuments.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The Muhammad Ali Pasha Mosque crowns Cairo's Citadel, accompanied by Arabic text and an Eye of Horus registration device. Green, pink and brown engraving surrounds two security threads: a narrow solid thread and a wider windowed thread with value and coat-of-arms elements. The mosque remains dominant despite the denser modern security structure.
Reverse
A bow-bearing Ramesses II advances in his war chariot beside reliefs from the Chapel of Senusret I at Karnak. Coronation, temple-building and offering scenes form a long carved register beneath stylized papyrus. English inscriptions and another Eye of Horus connect the archaeological narrative to the face's registration device.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this May 2022 issue belongs to the mature paper generation of Egypt's twenty-pound denomination shortly before the polymer successor appeared in 2023. That position makes it a natural bridge between the long-running paper series and the country's new polymer era. It captures a technological transition while retaining the familiar paper design.
