The second Egyptian polymer denomination joins Cairo's Alabaster Mosque to Cleopatra, the Great Pyramid and Ramesses II in motion.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The Muhammad Ali Pasha Mosque crowns Cairo's Citadel in green, blue and yellow, set beside Arabic inscriptions and a transparent architectural window. Domes and twin minarets give the face a strong vertical rhythm, while the polymer substrate supplies open areas that conventional paper watermark fields once provided. No separate security thread interrupts the composition.
Reverse
Ramesses II fires his bow from a war chariot beside the Great Pyramid and a statue of Queen Cleopatra. English text and large value figures organise the three ancient subjects across the reverse, while transparent elements carry through the substrate's visual language. The scene combines military action, monumental architecture and royal portraiture.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, introduced on 20 June 2023, this was the first regular twenty-pound polymer issue in Egypt. It extends the country's polymer transition beyond the ten-pound denomination and therefore holds a clear place in collections tracing major changes in Egyptian banknote production. It anchors the second step in that national transition.
