ThemePortraits & People

Nefertiti's profile gives this tiny five-piastre note a sculptural centre, surrounded by lilac, blue and black security engraving.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

An ancient bust of Queen Nefertiti occupies the principal panel beneath Arabic text naming the Arab Republic of Egypt. Black, lilac and blue ornament encloses the portrait, while the five-piastre denomination and serial number sit within the compact margins. The pale watermark reserve prevents the small format from feeling crowded.

Reverse

Arabic and English state titles and the denomination replace a pictorial vignette on the reverse. Guilloche rosettes and framed value devices provide rhythm across the black, lilac and blue field, making typography and security engraving the main visual subjects. The quiet reverse allows Nefertiti's portrait to remain the note's defining image.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, compact, heavier serial numerals define this 2002 Nefertiti variety within a design shared with the later numeral form. The two create a clear comparison set because typography alone establishes the catalogued difference on this small denomination. Identification remains straightforward without ultraviolet light, magnification or other specialist equipment.
