ThemePortraits & People

A poised bust of Nefertiti anchors a miniature note whose collectable distinction lies in the scale and spacing of its serial.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Queen Nefertiti's ancient bust is set within black, lilac and blue linework beneath Arabic state text. The five-piastre denomination appears in ornamental medallions, and a broad watermark field opens beside the portrait. Thin, more widely spaced serial numerals change the balance of the face without altering its central archaeological subject.

Reverse

The reverse is built from Arabic and English text, repeated values and layered guilloche rather than a separate scene. Blue and lilac ornament expands across the compact paper, with strong border geometry containing the open central field. Its restrained treatment provides a formal counterpart to the sharply defined portrait on the face.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, larger, thinner and more widely spaced serial numerals separate P-190Ab(1) from the companion P-190Aa. Collected together, the pair turns a subtle production choice into an immediately readable study of recognized serial varieties. The difference is central to a complete 2002 Nefertiti Pick-variety pairing and rewards careful close comparison.
