The geometry of Ibn Tulun Mosque faces an ancient Nile cycle of agriculture, offering and fishing on this mid-1990s five-pound note.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The Ahmad Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo anchors the face in slate blue, green, yellow and orange. Its broad courtyard architecture and distinctive minaret are set beside Arabic text, serial numbers and a large denomination. The open watermark area counterbalances the dense ornament and allows the mosque's strong horizontal profile to remain clear.

Reverse

Ptolemaic temple reliefs present agriculture, fishing and a Nile god holding an offering table with lotus and papyrus flowers. Hieroglyphs and a stylized sun extend the carved sequence across the reverse, while English bank text and the value frame it. The imagery treats the Nile as a source of work, ritual and abundance.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, dated late in the Ismail Hassan Mohamed stage, this August 1995 example belongs just before the next catalog transition in the five-pound series. It suits a collection built around the gradual evolution of a durable design rather than major changes in artwork. Subtle production history is the main source of variety interest here.
