Al-Azhar Mosque opens the design in warm colour before Ramesses II appears through battle, sculpture, river craft and royal inscription.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo stretches across the face in pink, orange and green engraving. Domes, arcades and minarets sit beneath Arabic bank text, while the fifty-piastre value and serial numbers occupy the corners. The pale watermark reserve gives the historic religious complex room to remain legible within the small denomination.

Reverse

A battle carving of Ramesses II shares the field with a granite statue of the ruler holding the heka crook, now in Turin's Museo Egizio. Stylized papyrus flowers, the prow of a reed boat and a cartouche naming Ramesses II extend the image from royal power to river symbolism. English text completes the compact archaeological montage.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, 16 June 1983 is the latest listed date for the Shalaby-signed variety. That position gives the note clear chronological interest within a dated sequence of Egypt’s Al-Azhar and Ramesses II design. Its significance rests on the documented date range, without treating the endpoint as proof of a production or issuance event.
