ThemeReligious Heritage

Al-Azhar's skyline opens toward Ramesses II in battle and sculpture, with papyrus, reed craft and cartouche extending the royal theme.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Al-Azhar Mosque spreads across the face in warm pink, orange and green. Its domes and minarets sit beneath Arabic bank text, while serial numbers and values occupy the upper and lower margins. The pale watermark field provides visual relief and lets the historic Cairo complex remain the unmistakable centre of the composition.

Reverse

Ramesses II appears both in a battle carving and as a granite statue holding the heka crook, now preserved in Turin. Papyrus flowers, the prow of a reed boat and a royal cartouche connect the two portrayals. English inscriptions and denomination devices frame an image sequence concerned with kingship, warfare and the Nile world.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this late 1992 example comes from the extended Mahmoud Salah Hamed stage and provides a natural counterpart to the short 1994 successor issue. The pair shows how signature and date collecting can uncover separate chapters within an outwardly unchanged fifty-piastre design. Chronology, rather than altered imagery, supplies the collecting narrative.
